Hastings College
We pride ourselves on doing quality work. One project Sweety’s Engraving is especially proud of are the designs we engraved for Hastings College.
Here is the story behind the Morrison-Reeves Science Center inlayed floor design images on the cutting edge of technology!
Peter Kiewit Construction contacted us for Hastings College and asked if we could sandblast a design image into 3000 grit silica-sand cement. The Craft Superintendent Terry Elder with Engineer David Quinn initiated this idea to sandblast the science center symbols and inlay with colored concrete.
On July 22, 2008, we did our first mock-up and were successful in our attempt to cut clean smooth edges into the concrete 1/4 inch deep without the aggregate chipping.
The College chose a red, non-shrink cement inlay. A flooring company contracted to do the cement color inlay and Diamond Head floor polishing, sanding and sealing.
Our process took 10 working days to blast some 50 science symbols into the floor. We were able to accomplish this even with rainy, muddy weather while trying to run a sandblaster and keep the floor clean for the sandblast masks.
Keeping the sandblaster running proved to be quite an interesting task until we figured out the right combination and made adjustments for the operation of our equipment. A great share of the time we worked by the moonlight with two overhead lights on either end of the building.
This process took more than 3000 pounds of aluminum oxide sanding grit with approximately 72 hours for completion.
Being a small, solely owned and operated business, this seemed like the big time! We were so grateful for the experience and the chance to work with Kiewit (the third largest construction company in the world), it was an awesome experience.
